The South shall rise again! Racist Republicans block renewal of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

In March of 1965, Alabama state troopers attacked a peaceful march across Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama. The marchers’ destination: The state capitol in Montgomery, Alabama.

President Johnson, a Democrat, demanded a strong voting rights law, which ultimately led to Voting Rights Act of 1965. Today House Republicans, who have always objected to the legislation, found pretext and numbers to stop renewal.
