The right to bear arms is a liberal tradition....

Henry also spoke insightfully about the right of all law-abiding citizens to bear arm. “Are we at last,” Henry queried, “brought to such humiliating and debasing degradation, that we cannot be trusted with arms for our defense?” Of course not. As Democrats we should reclaim our liberal tradition from conservatives. In the hands of conservatives liberalism is ultimately confused and misused. Just look at what conservatives have done to patriotism and Christianity!

Progress is central to liberalism. At some point, arguably, arming the citizenry no longer becomes, or remains rather, a progressive move. What once was liberal becomes conservative. Classical liberalism = conservatism.

The only other explanation is that liberalism is 200 years dead.
